About Little Brown Mission

What is the little brown mission?

Core Values

Commissioned:

We believe our Lord Jesus has sent us into urban Long Beach to make new disciples and grow mature disciples.

Combined:

We believe the Holy Spirit will draw mission groups, who have an overlapping vision and passion for making disciples into the mission hub.

We are an
URBAN MISSION HUB

Creative:

We believe that effective mission requires new and non-traditional ways of reaching people and making new disciples.

Constructive:

We believe the Holy Spirit will draw mission groups, who have an overlapping vision and passion for making disciples into the mission hub.

The Little Brown Church was founded in 1905 as a Presbyterian congregation to focus upon the immediate neighborhood in downtown Long Beach. For a number of years the church remained viable. But neighborhood transition saw members move farther away and die off. In this transition the focus of the church remained on former members instead of engaging the changing neighborhood. By 2013 the Presbytery of Los Ranchos had plans to close the church, worship having dropped to about twelve persons. All that was left was the building assets and location.

During 2013, with the arrival of a missional pastor, a small group of people listened to the Holy Spirit and created an incarnational plan to refocus the mission upon the changed neighborhood—if Little Brown could re-engage and emerge as a fresh expression of the Kingdom of God, a mission station in downtown Long Beach, vital ministry could happen. Jesus was calling the Little Brown Church to become the Little Brown Mission, a center for housing and coordinating outreach ministries to reach the city.

We are an Urban Mission Hub:

  • An urban mission hub is an arm of the church; we are:
  • A team that has mission-focused groups
  • A team that is a partnership sharing common vision
  • A pastor who focuses on, mentors, and leads the team

Focused on Kingdom causes not just community development

It’s joining the team not just renting space

It’s a team leader not just a landlord
